The Rainy Day

Still raining! The rain is still pouring down and thunder is still roaring and we're stuck inside.  No!  "Finally!" Greah exclaimed.  Then we got a go on the waterside but only one go.  That was the worst day of my life.

Room 19's blog

Room 19's experiments with sugar were interesting.

Water slide

The people are sliding down the water slide.

Room 19 blog

Mia, Haniel and Samantha are having their first time taking a photo for the blog.

Room 19 water slide day

The water slide is super cool.

Skid tastic

The boy is skidding down the slide and zoomed into the water. Then Karen's sister went in the way.

Blayke, Charlie and Coco are learning to blog

Charlie, Blayke and Coco have bean learning how to take photos.

The water slide

People were on the water slide. They splashed when they came down.

Scaredy Squirrel and the Killer Bees

Here are some of the Mathematical statements we made about the Super Squirrels.
We brainstormed these ways to eliminate those pesky killer bees.
We had fun deciding on which squirrel we wanted to be.  After they were dyed and named, we made a bar chart to see what statements we could make them.
We read the book, Scaredy Squirrel and learnt about taking risks and killer bees.  These can cause problems to our learning so we need to use bug spray to keep them under control.  We thought of lots of killer bees that cause a problem in SSR so it not SILENT sustained reading at all; but we also thought to lots of ways we can use bug spray to help us stay focused on the task.  We will refer to Scaredy Squirrel to get tips to help us with our learning all through the year.

Stalactites in the classroom!

In week one, we made a saturated solution of baking soda and water.  We poured some of the solution into two beakers and joined them with a piece of wool  We weighed each end down so the wool stayed in the water . . . and waited.  After the weekend we could see the water had travelled up and along the wool.  As the water evaporated, so the crystals were left behind on the wool, in much the the same way as stalactites are made.

Book marks

We had to make a tassel for our book mark by folding pieces of wool in half and threading them through the hole.

We drew our name in bubble writing on one side, and on the other we drew our favourite book character.

Swimming

Sad times - time to get out of the pool.

Practising lengths in preparation of the Middle School Swimming Sports on 12th March.

Competitive swimmers practising their start.
We go swimming on Monday morning.  We are the first class in the water so the surface of the cool is smooth and glassy.  After our swim we had a poll and found that 4 students thought the water was too cold but a wopping 20 thought the water temperature was just right.  Go the solar heating!

Illustrated recounts about our Summer holidays

Come and visit our wall display of Summer stories.
Our first piece of writing in Year 3 was a recount about our Summer holiday.  We illustrated our story and then shared them with the class.  You can read them all on the Writing page.

Our class treaty

We signed our names using a feather quill, just like the people who signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.

We worked together to co-construct our class treaty.  Everyone promised to respect and follow all the decrees we decided upon.

Valentine Cards

When  the coloured paper was dry, we cut it into strips and wove the strips together.

First we dyed our page to our own design.
We learned about symbolic language and how pictures or symbols can be used instead of words, like a heart for love or white dove for peace.  Then we made a Valentines card to secretly give to someone we love on Valentine's Day.  Look in the Visual Art page to see all our cards.

Cicada Maths

We searched for cicada shells behind the Year 1 classrooms.

We have collected 75 cicada shells.

Spelling tests

We have had lots of spelling tests, as well as Maths tests, to check where we are in our learning and what we need to learn.

Medical Emergency!

Cooper lost his tooth but kept it safe in a CBS tooth container.

Our first visit to the library in 2015

Best presentation of our team song

We worked hard on our presentation when we copied the Weka Team song into our poem collection.

Reading our Year 3 buddy letters

People who were in Year 3 last year wrote everyone a letter at the end of term 4.  Mrs Bear saved them and gave them out to people to read who were new to Year 3 so they could get some helpful tips. There was enough for everyone to have one each.  We read them and then took them home for our night's reading.  We shared some of the useful hints and the exciting events to come, like Weka Day Camp and kayaking.  Some of the ideas helped us write our class treaty.

Not everyone is in a photos - but everyone got their own letter to read and take home.

At the end of the year, we will write letters with our own handy hints for next year's students - I wonder what we will write about?
