Generations Morning

Aiden looked after two sets of guests, one set from New Zealand and the other from America.

Blayke shared a book about kiwis from the New Zealand culture box with his Nana.

Charlie brought a polished wooden bowl decorated with porcupine quills from Ethiopia.

We sang a song of welcome in two parts.
Lauren shared her book about her trip to Ireland with her Nana.

Monique checked out places where her family has lived or visited on the New Zealand map.

Nissi looked exquisite in her traditional silk dress from Korea.

Sam and his Grandad looked over their extensive family tree extending back to the United Kingdom.
On Thursday, the whole school had a Generations Morning when family members were invited to share foods, items, books and stories about their family culture.

First we performed a song welcoming our guests in many different languages.  After that we discussed all the cultures in our classroom with our guests: Canada, China, Korea, Ethiopia, Ireland, England, America, Australia and New Zealand.

We ended the Generations Morning with a shared lunch of different foods from all the countries represented in Room 19.  We served tea and coffee to our guests, hot and cold savoury food and delicious puddings.  Finally, our guests were full and we were able to choose our lunchtime selection for a table laden with goodies.  There was even enough left over to have a quick snack after PE in the afternoon.

We would like to thank all the family members who were able to join us and to all those who provided us with such delectable lunch items from their home country.  You all helped to make the day a great success.

m & m experiment

On Wednesday we placed m&ms in bowls of water to see what would happen.  The coloured sugar coats on the outside of the m&ms dissolved and coloured the water making distinct patterns.   We found the blue dye dissolved the fastest.  The colours stayed separate because the density of the different coloured dyes is slightly different.  Afterwards we could eat the (wet) chocolate. Fortunately, it still tasted the same in the middle!

m and ms

Me and Zeb dropped the m&ms in the bowl with the water. We waited.  Then it EXPLODED with colours.

Science experiments

First I choose a buddy and my buddy was Callum.  Next Callum got the white bowl and then I got 4 m&ms and I gave 2 to Callum and put them in the white bowl and watched the colours change.  It was beautiful.  The green started to take over the whole white bowl.  Then me and Callum went to the mat and I did the tally marks.  We voted for dry or wet chocolate and the dry chocolate won but unfortunately the people who voted for the dry chocolate had to eat the wet chocolate and it tasted like a disgusting mint chocolate.

I liked how you used like a disgusting mint chocolate

Three thirds

The three thirds were different colours. The colours formed a dark black spot in the middle.

The m and ms

First we put the m and ms in to water and all of the colours went on the bottom of the plastic bowl.

My m and m's

First me and Oliver got some m and m's. Then we put the m and m's in the cup with the water in it. Then the magic started. The m and m's started to dissolve into quarters.

Room 19 Takes a Look at the Sun

Room 19 used safe solar viewers from the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand to look at the sun.  We had to wait patiently as a cloud slowly passed in front of it, but we were rewarded with a great view.  Afterwards we went back to the classroom to write poetic stories about what we had seen.  We hope you enjoy reading our blogs.  We are looking forward to reading your comments.

The Sun

The sun is like a shining orange spot in the sky.  We stared at it.  Some of us said, "I've seen nothing like it".
Written by Aiden

The Sun

The sun is like an orange moon with black clouds, but I think it is a lovely orange with no green because, how is the sun green?
Written by Coco

The sun

The sun was like a ginormous ball.  It was amazing. I couldn't believe it.  It was mind blowing. It was like a star.
Written by Sarah

The Sun

The sun was like a orange moon in the sunny sky in the air so high and gloomy with the clouds. They were dark black like raining stars in the moon light, so bright and black.  There was dark scary rain and a beaming sun in the cold air.
Written by Carissa

The Sun

The sun is like the golden orange dot. And it was hot when I looked at it.

The Sun

The orange sun is like a orange ball.  We looked at the sun.  The sun was shining in your face and it made your eyes hot.  People would like to to look at it again because it was lots of fun. We got so excited when we looked at it.  The sun is a star and its real name is Sol.

The Sun

The amazing sun looks like a beaming golden dot.  The sun is so bright that if you touch it, you will catch on burning hot fire.
By Cooper.

The sun

The sun looked  gold  like  a  shooting  star.  The  sun  looked  really  round  too.  The  sun  looked like an upside down hat on a magician's table.   As  the  clouds  went away,  the  sun  got  brighter.      Written by Monique

The Sun

The sun looked like a orange.  The sun is so yellow.  The sun can help us do sport.  The clouds were behind the sun.   I saw the clouds were black and I saw that the sun was yellow.
Written by Esmond

The Sun

The dazzling sun is like a thick chunk of gold.  Light orange is such a wonderful sight, like a full moon gliding across the sky.  What a free life you have because you have the whole sky to yourself. It was impeccable and immaculate mixed together.
By Magnus

The Sun

The sun is like a huge firefly flying in the sky like a fire orange dragon, but it is not moving.  As I looked at the clouds, I said, "It's not there" but then it came out and everyone shouted, "Look!  Look! There it is!"
By Sophie

The Sun

The sun looked like golden orange in the air or the full moon gliding across the water.  There was a very thick cloud blocking the sun but when it came out it was so bright that it nearly blinded me.
Written by Blayke

The Sun

The sun was deep orange and really round.  The sun was a golden and deep orange because we looked through the safety sun thing.  When we looked through first they were black.  When the sun came out it slowly went closer to us.  My eyes were beaming!  Everybody felt like their eyes were going to pop out.

The Sun

The sun looks like a golden orange sun with little spots on it.

The Sun

The sun was orange.  It looked like a moon.  It popped out like popcorn.  It made my eyes go red.  It was gliding across the sky.  It was like a little shiny star.
Written by Haniel

The Sun

The sun was glowing like the red full moon or like a golden glimmering star.
Written by Callum

I liked how you used glowing like the red full moon.
(OLIVER)

The Sun

The sun was beaming orange and reddish and it looked like the moon.  When the sun was in the clouds it looked like a stripe.
Written by Jayden

The Sun

The sun looked like a circle made out of an orange piece of paper.  It was the brightest thing I have ever seen. It was gliding across the cloud. It was like a shiny light bulb, because it is the most furtherest thing from Earth.  The sun was like a gold star.
Written by Zeb

The Sun

The sun is really orange but also hot like the moon and a cartoon sun. It was gliding past a very big cloud quickly.
Written by Charlie.

The Sun

The sun was just appearing.  It had the clouds, but not just any kind of clouds, an orange cloud.  It was glimmering in the warm sunlight.   When the sun came out, the sun shine was very hot and it looks like a star but it also looked like the moon.
Written by Samantha

The Sun

The sun is beautiful.  The sun is orange.  It looks like the full moon but it's sort of red. It blasted my eyes.  I thought the sun had little stripes but it doesn't have stripes. When the sun popped out I nearly screamed but instead I jumped so high that I nearly went to the sky .
Written by Lauren

The Sun

As the sun was so shy it hid behind the bubbly white cloud.  "Holy canolli,"I shouted.  One quarter, one half,  a whole sun,  the sky turned purple.  "OK," shouted Mrs Bear.  "Let's go and write about it!" "Wow that blew my socks off," I said.  It was a catastrophe!
Written by Greah

The Sun

The golden beaming sun was like a gigantic volcanic lava eruption floating in a big puddle in the sky.
Written by Oliver.

I liked how you described the sun using a volcanic simile.  I also liked the idea of the puddle in the sky.
Mrs Bear

I liked how you used a lava eruption simile.
(Louise Darby)

The Sun

I think the sun is like a beautiful sunset.   My eyes were beaming with joy!  I watched it glide through the puffy clouds. I jumped and screamed!
Written by Charlotte

The Sun

The sun was nowhere in sight.   Suddenly it tiptoed out. The gleaming sun was like a cartoon moon but orange  and firey hot.  It shone brightly in the sky like the snowy moon in a pitch black night.
Written by Sam M

The Sun

The sun looked like a red torch beaming right into my blue eyes.  First it was in the clouds but then it glided out of the clouds.
Written by Zach

I liked how you made a simile about the sun being like a torch, Zach.  It was interesting to hear that you have a red torch in your bedroom which helped you get the idea.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution on Friday, 15 May

 b

On Friday, Room 19 was part of Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.  Everyone made a squashed sandwich using all kinds of vegetable fillings, some we had even never tried before.  We tried: beetroot, gerkin, carrot, cottage cheese, chick peas, mung beans, mustard and cress, lettuce, capsicum, vegemite and mustard pickle.  We also followed Jamie's recipe to make a minty yoghurt dip.  We ate this with carrot sticks for a brain food break after lunch.  Mrs Bear said we were like bees round a honey pot - we will have to make this again!

I liked the minty yoghurt dip because we dipped some carrots in and it tasted yum - OK
I liked how we had different things to try.  Even though we didn't like them we had to have a little try - MJ

I could see that your sandwiches were yummy.

Making Clay Owls based on Henry Moore's bronze art work

 z

On Wednesday, we made clay owls using Henry Moore's bronze sculpture of a owl as our model.  We even made large holes for their eyes, just like his work.  We were very lucky to have plenty of parent and grandparent volunteers who helped us.
Afterwards there was lots of clearing up to do - Mia said that it was just like being at home!

The clay felt muddier than mud when it was wet - ZR
It was really hard to make the shoulders because you had to make the clay go in and down - MP

Play Clay Day

We had a practice day when we learnt to handle clay and keep it moist.

I liked how everyone made something cool - OK
I liked how we got to make whatever we wanted - CW

ANZAC Week

In ANZAC week we learned about the ANZACs and how bravely they fought at Gallipoli.  We made poppies to wear at the ANZAC service.

We learned how to stiple paint to make a background - some people painted blue sunny sky, and some an dark evening sky.

We learned about the significance of poppies as a lasting memorial to the soldiers who died in the war.  We used collage to make a field of poppies as a remembrance in Room 19.
